Service Over Price: What Shop Owners Are Really Saying
Every shop owner knows price matters. It’s part of every conversation, every renewal, every quote.
But here’s what’s becoming increasingly clear: price isn’t the deciding factor anymore.
Today alone, I had three separate interactions with three different shops. Different people, different roles, but all pointing to the same issue.
Shop 1: “As long as you’re close…”
After a solid conversation about his operations, coverage, and current frustrations, he said something that stuck:
“John, as long as your price is close, I will move.”
That’s not someone chasing the cheapest option. That’s someone who’s done feeling overlooked.
He wasn’t asking for a discount. He was asking for attention, guidance, and someone who actually understands his business.
Shop 2: “I don’t feel taken care of”
Later that same day, another shop owner shared a similar experience. Same insurer. Same frustration.
“Their price is good, but I don’t feel I am getting the care or service. I have no idea if my policy is even up to date.”
Good price. Still unhappy.
Because at the end of the day, insurance isn’t just about what you pay—it’s about what you get when it matters.
Shop 3: “What’s garage insurance?”
This one hit differently.
I was at a shop, speaking with a mechanic, when the person responsible for the paperwork came over—someone directly involved in the business side.
Standing just a few feet away, she asked:
“What’s garage insurance?”
Let that sink in.
The person handling documentation for the shop didn’t know what their core coverage even was.
The mechanic handed her my card. There was a brief, uncomfortable moment, and then she said:
“We’ve been with the same guy for years.”
And that was the end of it.
But what does that really mean?
It likely means no regular reviews. No walkthroughs. No conversations about changes in the business. Just a renewal sent out each year, signed, and filed away.
Meanwhile, the shop evolves—new equipment, new services, new risks.
And the policy? It stays stuck in time.
So, Is Price Really the Bottom Line?
If price were everything, Shop 1 wouldn’t be ready to leave.
Shop 2 wouldn’t feel neglected.
And Shop 3 wouldn’t be operating without even a basic understanding of their own coverage.
What shop owners are really telling us is this:
They want clarity on what they’re paying for
They want guidance as their business evolves
They want someone who shows up—not just at renewal, but throughout the year
They want confidence that their coverage actually matches their operation
Price gets you in the door. Service is what keeps you there.
The Reality for Shop Owners
In the garage world, things change constantly. If your insurance isn’t keeping up—and if no one is helping you keep it up—you’re exposed whether you realize it or not.
That’s the real risk.
Not being overpriced.
Being out of sync.
Where We Stand
At Commercial Guy Insurance and Garage Guy Insurance, we believe the job doesn’t end when the policy is issued.
That’s where it starts.
Because being “close on price” is easy.
Making sure your coverage actually fits your business—today and six months from now—that’s where real service lives.
